1. Introduction
In this article, we shall examine these so-called “moderate Muslims” or “Modern Muslims”. I will be mentioning the characteristics of these so-called “moderate” or “modern” Muslims. Just see all these characteristics and see how many laws of Allah (SWT) do these people violate and how many Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) they abandon. They do not even consider themselves to be wrong, they seem to have no problem with it. They do not even feel guilty for that. At the end of this article you will realize that these deviant people have formed their own cult which has NOTHING to do with Islam.
I seek refuge from Allah from being a moderate Muslim.
2. Types of Moderate Muslims
There are two types of “moderate Muslims”
- Apologetic people, they are practicing Muslims but they are apologetic. They go on defense and call themselves “moderate Muslims”. I am not against these people. They only need to learn how to face the criticism and turn the tables.
- I am referring to these ones in this article. The Glorious Quran describes them
8. Of the people there are some who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe.
9. Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!
10. In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves). (Quran 2:8-10)
The Quran says
“O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger,” (Quran 4:136)
When Allah (SWT) says to those who believe to believe in Allah and his messenger, who is he referring to? He is referring to those who only profess to be believers but do not actually have faith and conviction.
3. Characteristics of these so called “moderate Muslim”
Characteristics of these so-called “moderate Muslims”
- They do not believe in the implementation of Shariah. They believe in secularism. To say no to Sharia is to say no to Allah and to say no to Allah is to say no to Islam, As simple as that. They demand for democracy which is nothing but Kufr and Shirk. Read this article to know about the reality of democracy

- These so-called “moderate Muslims” do not believe in women wearing hijaab. Many of them would even criticize those women who wear hijaab. They would be like, well hijaab is not required and will come up with all sort of justification for that. They clearly violate the laws of Allah given in the Quran in 24:31 and 33:59
- They do not believe in men keeping a beard. They do not even like anyone keeping a beard. Abandonment of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
Volume 7, Book 72, Number 781:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said, "Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard (as it is).
4. They have no problem with dealing in riba (interest). Infact, they do not even believe that it is haraam to deposit money in fixed accounts in which one gets fixed rate of interest. They have no problem with it. It is one of the most heinous crimes. The Quran says
“Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say: "Trade is like usury," but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire: They will abide therein (for ever).” (Quran 2:275)
“278. O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and give up what remains of your demand for usury, if ye are indeed believers.
279. If ye do it not, Take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger. But if ye turn back, ye shall have your capital sums: Deal not unjustly, and ye shall not be dealt with unjustly.” (Quran 2:278-279)
5. They have no problem with watching television programmes in which many obscene things come. Now I am not against television per se. But most of the things which come on television are haraam (unlawful), and I am against haraam (unlawful) things. These so-called “moderate Muslims” aren’t concerned about it, clear violation of Allah’s command.
“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty:” (Quran 24:31)
6. They are against polygamy, something for which Allah (SWT), the maker of this universe has given permission. Now I am not saying that every man should marry more than one. Infact polygamy is something that is not even encouraged in Islam it is only PERMITTED. We Muslims have no right to make something forbidden what Allah (SWT) has permitted and to make something permitted what Allah (SWT) has forbidden. Allah has permitted limited polygamy and there is wisdom behind it. One of the reasons for it is to alleviate the problem of surplus women in the society. The Quran says
“It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path.” (Quran 33:36)
The best judgment is the judgment of Allah. The Quran says
“But who, for a people whose faith is assured, can give better judgment than Allah.” (Quran 5:50)
Allah also questions.
“Is not Allah the wisest of judges?” (Quran 95:8)
The answer is reposed in the question that the wisest of judges is Allah!
7. They make certain statements like “well this teaching of Islam was for then, 1400 years ago and its not for us today anymore.” They even at times ridicule things which have been said and done by the Prophet (SAW). This is indeed kufr. Anyone who says that the teachings of Islam were only for 1400 years ago and not for today has indeed disbelieved in Islam! The teachings of Islam are perfect and they are as good for today as they were 1400 years ago.
8. They always blame Muslims for whatever happens. They like say Muslims this and Muslims that. Whereas they forget whatever non-Muslims do. They only consider Muslims to be bad and are like “Muslims are the biggest terrorists”. They hate Imams and Maulanas, but these people go to them only, when they have to solemnize the marriage. They offer salaat (especially the Friday prayers) behind these Imams only but yet they hate them. As we can see that these people are nothing but hypocrites.
9. Most of these so-called “moderate Muslims” if not all do not even offer 5 obligatory prayers, one of the most heinous crimes in Islam. The Prophet (SAW) said
Sahih Muslim, Volume 1, Number 0146:
It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that he heard the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying. Verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence of prayer.
The Quran says
41. And (ask) of the Sinners: 42. "What led you into Hell Fire?" 43. They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; (Quran 74:41-43)
Most of these so-called “modernist” or “moderate” Muslims do not even offer 5 obligatory prayers. Read this article of mine

10. These so-called “moderate Muslims” do not even give proper Zakat. Just look around yourself these so-called “moderate Muslims” and see how many actually give Zakaat. If a person has a saving of $10,000 or a property, which is not in personal use for one lunar year, then he atleast has to give $250 in charity every lunar year as long as he has the saving.
Now the list can go on, but this will suffice for now. If you see their lifestyle you will find very few things, which are Islamic, rest of their life is not Islamic in any manner.
Conclusion:
So we can see from the above that these so-called “moderate Muslims” are far away from Islam. Even giving the name “moderate Muslim” is wrong, because Allah (SWT) hasn’t given us this label. The Quran gives us the label of a Muslim.
“Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam"? (Muslimeen) (Quran 41:33)
The Holy Quran commands us to submit to Allah completely. The Quran says
“O ye who believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly; and follow not the footsteps of the evil one; for he is to you an avowed enemy.” (Quran 2:208)
Partial obedience is not acceptable to Allah.
“….Then is it only a part of the Book that ye believe in, and do ye reject the rest? but what is the reward for those among you who behave like this but disgrace in this life?- and on the Day of Judgment they shall be consigned to the most grievous penalty. For Allah is not unmindful of what ye do.” (Quran 2:85)
If you are among these so-called, “moderate Muslims” change yourself before it is too late.
Now people may ask me what type of a Muslim I am. The answer is I am simply a Muslim, I take the label which is given to us by Allah (SWT). I do not call myself a sunni, shia or anything. I am simply a Muslim like our Prophet (pbuh) was.
There is no such thing called “moderate Islam” or “moderate Muslim”. There is only one Islam i.e. the one told to us by Allah and his messenger (SAW).
